Lambert: Sunderland Boss Ross Needed More Time
Wednesday, 9th Oct 2019 11:47

Blues boss Paul Lambert believes Sunderland were wrong to sack their manager Jack Ross yesterday, believing his fellow Scott should have been given more time.

Ross, 43, was dismissed by the Black Cats, who are currently sixth in League One, eight points behind leaders Town, having finished fifth last season before losing the play-off final to Charlton. They were also the beaten finalists in the Checkatrade Trophy when Portsmouth carried off the trophy.

The former St Mirren manager joined the Wearsiders in the summer of 2018 having been very much in the running for the boss’s job at Portman Road after impressing in interviews.

“I don’t think he has had long enough at all - he’s started to rebuild a club which was going down and down,” Lambert told BBC Radio Scotland’s Sportsound.

“It’s probably unfair I think. I think people look at the division and what happened last year, where Sunderland are in stature as a club, and think they’ve got a divine right to be up there.

“I’m never really surprised by football because of the way the game is - people lose jobs even when things are going well.”

I still like Ross and look back in hindsight and wonder how he'd have done here. I maintain that he's a better gaffer than Hurst and simply picked the wrong team to manage in English football. I think he should have went with Barnsley when they came knocking.

Sunderland probably looked at us - how well we've done this season after a terrible Championship season like they had and decided Ross isn't doing there what Lambert is here

He wasn't the first manager to fail at Sunderland and he certainly won't be the last. They have big expectations. Consequently it has proved a poisoned chalice for successive managers. A lot of haters on Mike Ashley but they just beat Man Utd and Sunderland are two leagues below and don't like closing up a league this season either, unless they can get a miracle worker in fast! Still can't believe Keane got them up that time when they looked in with little chance of promotion. That was his only major plus on his managerial CV, after which it was downhill all the way as we know only too well! I'd be surprised if Ross doesn't get another chance elsewhere. I would of thought he's got a better chance of doing something again than Hurst has, although you just can never say never in football! I know Mick McCarthy is in with Ireland at the moment but I wonder if he'd be tempted by another crack at Sunderland. He did get them into the Premier League before thanks to a big helping hand from Marcus Stewart. It didn't work out very well when they went up but they did play some nice stuff to get promoted in the first place. But they failed to strengthen when they went up and paid the price. Norwich could have learned something from that perhaps!

I'm sure he will get a job very quickly. Sunderland us a bit of a poisonous chalice. Don't envy anyone who gets that job.

As a general rule I don't pay too much attention to what goes on at other clubs, but I found the Sunderland Til I Die documentary very eye-opening. They have been a club in huge turmoil for some time, need to cut their cloth according to where they find themselves and have no divine right to be anywhere other than where they are. Pulling the plug on Ross when they're in the top 6, just a few points off automatic promotion, seems reckless. Unless they have money to throw around, they need to develop some patience or it.s just a continuation of the mismanagement of the club.

In all honesty wkj the cheeky girls would have made a better gaffer than Paul Worst and deputy Doig.

The bottom line is how long do you give someone?
Jack Ross has had the whole of last season, and so far this season have won less than half of league games played. With this season being the last of the premier league parachute payments, they obviously thought Jack Ross isn't capable.
They have players on 30k per week, and lying in 6th place isn't good enough.
It's do or die this season for them. And correct decision made imo.

I think Paul Lambert has summed it up pretty much bang on - although fairness has very little to do with football these days. I think they'd have bubbled up to at least a play off spot this season - and I genuinely think they'll be looking at us and thinking that's what should be happening with them - League One is definitely a "must get out first time" league - otherwise we'll be in the same position as Sunderland next season. But we won't, as we're going up as Champions this season.. Amazing, after what that complete idiot Hurst did to us in a short space of time. Jack Ross is no Paul Hurst - but be careful what you wish for Sunderland!

Absolutely. They should have let him see out the season. He was doing an amazing job..... well keeping them nicely away from us and the top he was.

Unlike Paul Hurst, who took on a poor squad. Club morale, including club staff, players and fans shot to pieces.
Jack Ross took on a strong squad, given the leagues biggest budget and 40,000 fans ready to turn up.
He leaves 18 months later with the squad and club in a poorer position.
In hindsight glad PH got our job instead of Jack Ross.
Sunderland had the opportunity to sign players like Nolan, Jackson, Edwards etc 18 months back, but deemed them not good enough.
After the Mick ma years it needed someone unique to come into ITFC.
Paul Lambert was the one. Thanks Paul Hurst for supplying some of the tools we're using, to rip up this league.

Let us remember that Blunderland had a very similar record to ours this time last year....

I understand that last season he took Sunderland both to the play offs and the the final of the EFL trophy. This season Sunderland are in the play off places. What exactly does the Sunderland Board expect? Do they really think that by sacking the manager, appointing a new one (with all the cost involved) they will have better results?

@agentp I should imagine you are correct, sadly I have it on good authority they didn't make it past the first of marcus evans' interviews. Only Ross, Hurst, Tactics Tim and Gary Megson did

Funny old game football , as PH said . When things go wrong always look to the very top first ,for explanation ,understanding , certainty ,intelligence and commitment : no management team can exist in a vacuum and I wonder just what sort of mutuality has been created at Sunderland over the last few years ?
So my sympathies are with JR ,and I hope he's got a watertight contract which will see Sunderland having to pay suitable compensation ( or is this going to be a distasteful fight too ?) .
Character, resolve and integrity and honesty in communication continue in short supply all around ,and Football Club Boards and owners are notably fickle !
Meanwhile every support to PL and his team ,AND to ME for buckling down to the task of bringing success to ITFC again !

The trouble is PH wasn't tall enough to see the very top. He spent all his time here looking at Doigs b0llocks

Jack Ross is a good manager and Sunderland have made a booboo. We made massive error of judgment with Paul Hurst. Like John Duncan quite a few years ago

There are clubs out there that feel a devine right to be in a certain league or position within that league, Sunderland are one of them and to some degree we could be accused of the same. 6th position 25% into the season is a healthy place to be and I think Ross could have got them promoted this term. There will always be a handful baying for blood and I can say with a degree of certainty PL would be copping it from a few if we were 6th right now. Enough time is very rarely afforded to managers hence clubs and up like QPR, changing more often than their underwear!

I don't suppose Jack Ross likes us very much- turned him down last season and our form as a similar big stature club this season probably helped to get him sacked. Has left them in a better position than when he took over and I think they could be our biggest challengers (decent enough squad, fan base etc.) if they get decent someone in.

I work with a room full of Makems all going on about this supposed takeover and getting out of L1. Deluded lol.

They even moaned about Ipswich being allowed to play Bolton weakened whilst they had to play adults lol.
