Middlesbrough miss out on target as midfielder joins Serie A side

Middlesbrough were reportedly interested in Heerenveen midfielder Morten Thorsby according to TEAMtalk, but the one-time Norway international has instead opted for Italy.

The report suggests terms were being discussed between Dutch side Heerenveen and Middlesbrough, and a deal for Morten Thorsby was close to being completed. However, the Norweigen has since signed for Italian Serie A side Sampdoria on a four-year deal.

The midfielder has been loaned back to Heerenveen for the remainder of this season, and he will join Sampdoria at the start of the 2019/2020 campaign, the club has confirmed via their official website.

Talks were ongoing between Thorsby and Boro, but just as discussions had stalled, Sampdoria hijacked the deal, signing for an undisclosed fee this week.

Since breaking into the team at the age of 17, he has gone on to play over 100 top flight games in the Dutch Eredivisie, and he has scored 10 goals over the past five years since his debut. He was called up to represent his native Norway in 2017 in an international friendly 2-0 loss to Macedonia; this has been his only appearance for the Løvene.

It is no secret that Middlesbrough manager Tony Pulis is looking for flair and creativity, and having missed out on Thorsby, he must now turn his attention to other targets. Martin Braithwaite, who was often used as a number 10, has left for Leganes in La Liga, and reported interest in Portsmouth’s Jamal Lowe, Newcastle United’s Daniel Barlaser and Romaine Sawyers of Brentford show Pulis’ intentions of plugging the gap left by the Dane’s departure.
