Evans Departs Pompey
Thursday, 2nd May 2024 11:50

Former Blues midfielder Lee Evans has been released by Portsmouth after a 62-day spell in which he helped Pompey to the League One title.

The 29-year-old left Town at the end of January by mutual consent still a few weeks away from fitness following knee surgery earlier in the season.

He joined Pompey in March and made two starts and two sub appearances as the Hampshire club topped League One, his second successive promotion from the division and the fourth time he has been involved with a side which has won its way into the Championship during his career.

Writing on social media, Evans said: “I would like to thank everyone at Pompey for my time at the club and wish them all the very best for the future. I enjoyed playing my small part in what was a special season for the club.

“Massive credit must go to the manager and backroom staff as well as all the players. Also a big thank-you to all the fans for your amazing support.

“Being back to full fitness and playing was my personal goal from my time here and that’s what I have achieved, so I am excited to see what the summer brings. Now time to rest up and go again!”

That seems bizarre. He'd be a great addition for them in the Championship. Maybe that was the deal when he joined, get a few games under your belt and put yourself in the shop window, but no contract promised? Maybe injury issues are too much of a risk?

Feel sorry for him with so many injuries.

"If" he could've stayed fit he would've been a great asset here with his passing ability.

Can imagine Wrexham will be interested in taking a punt. Still a quality player if he stays fit.

I'm sure a L1 team will take a punt. He's never gonna give anyone a full season, he's just too fragile. Good luck to him though.

I know people look to the future and will be careful not to show disrespect to their current club but that is such a modest statement from Evans that I see it as genuine and heartfelt.

Has LE got a more serious problem than a simple knee injury then? Feel sorry that he's been released yet again. Good Luck Lee

Annoying we dropped him as we were at squad capacity and kept Williams who hasn't kicked a ball since last year and then had stupid legal troubles. Been nice if could have been here until end of the season.

Not exactly injury prone so they must have some big transfer plans if they are sure they can get in better than Lee after promotion.

Think we had not chose with Williams….but to “keep him on the book”…..don’t think he was ever coming back to Town.

Karlosfandangal, that's fair. But it was a wasted slot. Would love to have given Lee one last celebration with us. He certainly put int he shifts when called upon.

It would be nice of the club called him back for the promotion celebrations (if we do go up!) - as a player this season and last, he deserves to be part of it.

Wonder if there’s a twist to Brandongate if we get a point on Saturday.

Wouldn't want Williams here anymore, obvioysly not a model pro like the rest/most of the squad. Plenty of FBs to pick from if we go up.
As for Evans, one of those model pros, all the best. Fully agree with teepee and phoenix on their comments.

Lee Evans is a good player when fully fit, but has rarely played more than 20-30 games in a season so rising 30 in the summer clubs will be wary of giving him more than a short term deal.

You never know, this time next year he could be boasting having won League One 3 years on the trot!

The lad deserves a good deal and some luck. Ideally someone relegated from The Championship or pushing L1 promotion.
I really hope he gets a good club, nice fella and decent player too

A drop down to league one would benefit him due to his injury problems. Playing at a slower pace would greatly reduce his injuries.
